Before you start

  • A Fire TV device: any Fire TV Stick, Cube or Fire TV smart TV with the Amazon Appstore.
  • An IPVanish account. You will create it on your phone or computer in Step 1.
  • About ten minutes.

New to VPNs? Read how a VPN works first.

Step 1: Create your account first

Typing card details and passwords with a remote is slow and fiddly, so sign up on your phone or computer instead, through the IPVanish Fire TV offer. The Essential plan includes everything a Fire TV needs. One- and two-year plans include a 30-day money-back guarantee, so choose one of those if you want time to test it.

Step 2: Install IPVanish from the Appstore

  1. On the Home screen, go to Find, then Search.
  2. Type IPVanish and select the result.
  3. Choose IPVanish VPN from the publisher IPVanish.
  4. Select Get or Download, then Open.

Because it comes from the Appstore, there is no Downloader or sideloading involved, and the app updates by itself.

Step 3: Sign in and connect

  1. Log in with the email and password you created in Step 1.
  2. Fire TV asks for permission to set up a VPN connection. Select OK. This appears only once.
  3. Press Connect for the fastest server, or pick a country first.
  4. To check it works, open the Silk browser, search for “what is my IP” and confirm the location matches your server.

Step 4: Add the kill switch

A kill switch stops apps using your normal connection if the VPN drops for a moment. On Fire OS, IPVanish’s kill switch is a separate, free app:

  1. Search the Appstore for IPVanish VPN Kill Switch and install it.
  2. Sign in with the same account and accept its permissions.
  3. Press the big button to switch the kill switch on.
  4. Go back to IPVanish and connect.

From now on, if the VPN connection drops, apps lose internet instead of quietly using your home connection. That is the kill switch doing its job. Learn more in our VPN kill switch guide.

Five settings for smooth streaming.

Choosing a server

For streaming at home, pick a server in your own country, ideally the nearest city. Distance is the biggest factor in speed. If one server feels slow, try another city before changing any other setting. For more on why VPNs slow some connections and how to limit it, read VPN speed loss explained.

Using IPVanish with IPTV apps

IPVanish works with TiviMate, IPTV Smarters Pro and other players. Connect the VPN first, then open the player. If a service refuses to load while the VPN is on, either switch to another server or use Split Tunneling to exclude that player. Our guide to using a VPN with IPTV covers this in more detail.
